Implants

Dental implants are used to replace one or more missing teeth, to prevent existing teeth from shifting, to restore chewing and speech, and to prevent jaw problems. They resemble your missing teeth, safeguard the integrity of existing teeth and help maintain a healthy smile. The implant is essentially a titanium tooth root which permanently holds a replacement tooth. Today dental implants are the preferred method for replacing missing teeth. Because they look and feel so much more natural than traditional dental bridges or dentures, dental implants are very popular among our patients.

The implant process begins with a thorough examination of your teeth and jawbone to determine whether your jaw has enough bone to accept a dental implant without any extra support. If extra support is needed, bone grafts are strategically placed to strengthen the jawbone. A dental implant is then selected and surgically placed in the area of your missing tooth. It typically takes between 4 to 6 months for the implant to heal and integrate with the jawbone. Once the implant attaches to the jawbone, a custom made post and crown is fitted on the implant.

The greatest benefit of choosing dental implants is the fact that they do not require grinding down the teeth adjacent to the missing tooth as with traditional bridges. This means that the rest of your teeth will not be affected by the damaged or missing tooth. In addition, implants will typically last the lifetime of the patient and rarely need to be replaced.
